SLAYING THE CAREER GAME ONE CONNECTION AT A TIME π¨π½π»π©πΌπ»
Back in 2014 when I became aware of LinkedIn, I shamefully pronounced it “Link - it - in”. Now whether this was a failure of my early childhood education is still unknown. What I do know is that the virtual world where the unemployed, employed and employers meet absolutely changed my life.
Here I was living my best life in Barbados ππ», but desperately craving the landscape, culture and overall different experience that other countries offered. Having little to no money to travel to these places to explore the opportunities that existed there, I was forced to take the virtual flight instead.
Long story short, after 14 long months and 100 plus applications later, I landed a job in the beautiful island of Turks and Caicos.
Goodbye Barbados, Hello TCI π΄
Now I know you must be curious about my posting frequency, topics that I discussed and all that jazz. I mean how else would I have landed a job in this tropical paradise? The truth is I didn’t post at all. Not even once. What I did do was extensive research on the CEO’s, General Managers and senior staff of companies I wanted to work for. In short, I researched those who had the power to hire, and then sent them carefully crafted private messages introducing myself. Yes guys, the real magic was taking place in those DM’s, or InMail as LinkedIn calls it π
I swear to you, nine out of every ten private messages I sent, I received a response. Within 8 months I had received about 6 job offers in 4 different countries. In the end I said yes to the one in TCI.
So don’t walk, run your little cute behind over to LinkedIn and create a killer profile quick, fast and in a hurry in just 9 steps. Once you’re all set up, click here for some key tips and tricks to help get you connected with potential employers.
So what exactly makes LinkedIn standout for me in comparison to other social media platforms? Well for starters, it is a business-to-business (B2B) platform whereby companies can sell their products or services to other companies. With every other social media platform, companies target individual consumers (B2C).
It is also a platform where professionals converge, network, share knowledge, and discover business opportunities. With platforms like TIK TOK and Instagram for instance, they facilitate personal interactions and entertainment. However LinkedIn is strictly business-oriented….in a fun way of course π€ͺ.
But LinkedIn is also the most credible. This is in large part because it comprises of professionals, so content that is shared is seen as more reliable than that which is shared on a platform like SnapChat.
